The Ultimate Packing List for Your Family Photo Session

As a family photographer, I've seen it all. The perfectly prepared families who breeze through sessions, and the ones who realised halfway through that little Timmy's comfort bunny is sitting at home on the couch.

Over the years, I've learned that being well-prepared isn't about bringing everything but the kitchen sink it's about packing smart so you can relax and enjoy capturing these precious memories.

Let me walk you through my essential packing list, learned from real sessions with real families (and a few memorable mishaps along the way!).

The Absolute Must-Haves

Wipes, Wipes, and More Wipes

I cannot stress this enough: pack those essential wipes! Seriously, they're at the top of my list for a reason.

Messy hands, sticky faces, runny noses, and yes, even tears, wipes handle it all. I personally recommend Water Wipes because they're gentle and perfect for sensitive skin.

Trust me, there's nothing worse than trying to get that perfect family portrait when your toddler has sand stuck to their cheek or chocolate smeared across their chin. Keep those wipes accessible throughout the session.

But don't get too caught up if there is mud on their face or hair in their mouths because you will interput their connection. There is a time and place for when wipes can be used.

Comfort Items Are Non-Negotiable

Your child's comfort blanket, favorite stuffed animal, or special toy? Bring it.

I know you might worry about it being "in the shot," but here's the thing: comfort translates to genuine smiles and relaxed children, which makes for beautiful photos. (For more tips on getting your kids ready for their session, check out my post on how to prepare children for photos.)

I once had a little boy bring his bike to a beach session. He rode it, walked it, and it wasn't in all the family photos! But there's this one candid moment where he's trying to ride it into the sea that's honestly up there as one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. Those authentic moments? They're gold.

Weather and Location Essentials

Sun Protection is Critical

In summer sessions, sunscreen is absolutely non-negotiable. Bring hats too! Not only do they protect from the sun, but they can add a lovely touch to photos. I always have sunscreen with me as backup, but it's best if you apply it before we start.

Layer Up

You never know when the weather will turn. Bring coats and layers, especially for those golden hour sessions when temperatures can drop quickly. I'd rather have you comfortable and warm than shivering through your photos!

Beach Sessions? Don't Forget the Towel

If we're shooting at the beach, pack a towel. Actually, pack two. Children and water are like magnets they're going to get wet. It's not a matter of if, it's when. I had one session where a child went straight into the sea and got completely soaked. The parents weren't prepared, but thankfully they had family nearby who could bring dry clothes. Learn from their experience!

The Practical Stuff

Spare Clothes Are Essential

Bring a complete change of clothes for the kids. Accidents happen. Muddy puddles are irresistible. The sea is right there. Your child might need to warm up after getting wet, or they might have a bathroom accident. Just pack the spare outfit and hope you don't need it.

Smart Snacking Strategy

Keep snacks mess-free and chocolate-free you don't want melted chocolate on those coordinated outfits! I recommend cheese strings, mini cucumbers, and fruit snacks. Easy, clean, and kids love them.

But here's my pro tip: don't give your child the entire bag of snacks. Keep them in your possession and deal them out one or two at a time. This prevents the snack bag from disappearing, ending up in the sand, or causing a meltdown when it's empty.

What I Bring (So You Don't Have To)

I always have wipes with me and sunscreen as backup. But honestly, most families are really good at packing because let's face it children always need things no matter what you're doing, and a photoshoot is no different! You already know how to prepare for an outing with your kids; this is just another adventure.

My Top Packing Tips

Use an Easy-to-Carry Bag

Keep everything in one easy-to-carry bag. In our sessions, we move around a lot, and I don't want items getting lost or precious session time wasted unpacking and repacking. I'd rather be capturing those magical moments than waiting while you search for the wipes at the bottom of a massive tote.

Send Me Your Child's Playlist

This might sound odd, but trust me on this: children love songs and music! Before the session, send me a few of your child's favorite songs. We can play them during the session to keep the energy up and create a fun, familiar atmosphere. It's amazing how a favorite tune can turn a grumpy toddler into a dancing, smiling ball of joy.

Pack Your Patience (The Most Important Item!)

Here's something you can't buy at the store but absolutely need to bring: patience. I'm talking about patience for yourself, patience for your children, and patience for the process.

Family photo sessions with young children rarely go exactly as planned, and that's completely okay.

When you pack your patience, everything runs smoother. Your children can feel when you're stressed or rushed, and it affects their behavior. But when you're calm and patient? They relax too. That patience creates a calm, enjoyable atmosphere that makes the session feel less like a chore and more like quality family time.

Some of my best photos happen when parents take a breath, let go of perfection, and just enjoy the moment with their kids. That's when the real magic happens the genuine laughter, the natural interactions, the authentic smiles.

So before you pack anything else, make sure you've packed plenty of patience. It'll make the experience relaxing and enjoyable for everyone. (Want more advice on setting your kids up for success? Read my guide on how to prepare children for photos.)

The Bottom Line

Packing for a family photo session doesn't have to be stressful. Think of it like packing for a fun family outing because that's exactly what it should be! The families who enjoy their sessions the most are the ones who come prepared but stay flexible, who bring comfort items but don't stress about perfection.

Remember, I'm here to capture your family as you are real, beautiful, and wonderfully imperfect. The bike-riding boy, the sea-soaked toddler, the comfort blanket clutched tight these are the moments that make your photos uniquely yours.

So pack those wipes, bring the comfort items, grab some mess-free snacks, and let's create some magic together. I'll see you at the session!
