My children won't sit still or smile for the camera, is that a problem?

Honestly? Good. I don't want them to. The best family photos I've ever taken have never involved a child sitting still staring at a lens. I want them running, laughing, climbing on you, hiding behind trees, doing exactly what children do. My job is to follow them not the other way around. The chaos is the magic.

My approach

This is not a photoshoot. It's just your family, on a normal day, with me quietly in the corner.

I've never once asked a child to sit still and smile at my camera. Not because I can't but because that's not where the magic lives. The magic lives in the chase, the tickles, the moment your toddler trips over their own feet and you scoop them up laughing. Those are the photos you'll print and put on your wall. Those are the ones you'll show your grandchildren.

My job is simple. I follow your family, I stay out of the way and I catch the moments as they happen.

What that looks like in practice

I follow the children's lead
If they want to climb a tree, we climb a tree. If they want to chase the dog, we chase the dog. Children are at their most beautiful when they're completely absorbed in play and that's exactly when I'm at my best too.

I give the gentlest of prompts
Every now and then I'll suggest something chase your dad, give mum the biggest squeeze, show me how fast you can run. Nothing forced, nothing staged. Just enough to get everyone moving and laughing naturally.

I capture the in between moments
The look you give each other over their heads. The hand held without thinking. The quiet moment after the chaos settles. These are the shots most photographers miss. They're the ones I treasure most.

MY MOST ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FAMILY SHOOTS

Keep it simple, keep it cohesive and most importantly wear something you actually feel comfortable in. Co-ordinating tones work better than matching outfits think warm neutrals, soft blues, earthy greens. Avoid bold logos or busy patterns as they pull attention away from the faces that matter. And dress for the weather if we're outside in Devon in October, a cosy knit will always look better than a summer dress worn through gritted teeth.

Outdoors in a location that means something to you a favourite woodland, a beach, a meadow, somewhere your family actually goes and loves. Or at home, where your family is most themselves. There's something incredibly beautiful about photographing a family in their own space the muddy boots by the door, the kitchen table, the garden you've watched your children grow up in. Both work beautifully, it just depends on what feels most like you.
