What You're Actually Paying For When You Hire a Photographer

Let me guess. You've looked at a photographer's pricing, felt your eyes go wide, and thought "...for photos?"

I get it. I really do. And I'm not going to tell you off for thinking it, because honestly, from the outside, it probably does look like you're paying someone to show up, click a button a few times, and hand over some pictures. Easy job, right?

Wrong. And I say that with so much love.

Here's what's actually going on behind the scenes and why your photos are worth every penny.

It Starts Long Before I Pick Up My Camera

By the time I meet you on your wedding day, your portrait session, or your family shoot, I've already put in hours of work you'll never see.

There's the back-and-forth emails and messages, the planning conversations, figuring out the best location for your shoot, thinking about lighting at different times of day, creating a shot list, confirming logistics all of that happens before a single photo is taken.

Admin work doesn't sound glamorous, but it's what makes your experience smooth, stress-free, and you.

That planning time? It's built into what you pay for. Because a disorganised shoot shows in the final images, and you deserve better than that.

Travel Isn't Free (And Neither Is My Time Getting There)

Depending on your package, travel is either included or charged separately and there's a reason for that.

Getting to your location, whether it's a golden-hour field on Dartmoor, a Devon beach at low tide, or your wedding venue in the countryside, takes time, fuel, and effort.

I'm not just a photographer who shows up. I'm someone who cares enough to scout a location, arrive early, and make sure everything is ready before you get there. That counts for something.

The Gear Is Seriously Expensive

I know, I know everyone says this. But let me give you a real example.

One SD card the little memory card that holds your precious photos costs around £35. Just one.

And I carry backups of backups, because losing your wedding photos or your newborn portraits is simply not an option.

Then there's the camera body (we're talking thousands of pounds), the lenses (more thousands), the lighting equipment, the bags, the straps, the batteries, the editing software subscriptions... it adds up fast.

This isn't a hobby setup. It's professional-grade kit chosen specifically to give you beautiful, high-quality images in any lighting condition.

When you hire a professional photographer, you're not just paying for my time you're paying for tools that actually do your memories justice.

Editing Takes Way Longer Than You Think

This is the one that surprises people the most.

After your shoot, I don't just drag your photos into a folder and send them over. Editing is a full, time-intensive process that takes hours. And I mean hours not twenty minutes with a filter slapped on.

I go through every single image, select the best ones, and then carefully edit each photo: adjusting exposure, colour grading, skin tones, shadows, highlights, removing distractions, and making sure every image looks consistent and beautiful. For a wedding, that can mean editing hundreds of photos over multiple days.

That time is invisible to you which is exactly how it should be. You just see gorgeous, finished images. But behind those images is a huge amount of skilled, careful work that happens long after you've gone home.

Years of Experience Are Baked Into Every Shot

Here's something I wish more people understood: you're not just paying for a few hours of my time. You're paying for years of learning how to use that time well.

Knowing how to pose a nervous family so they look natural. Knowing how to find the best light at 2pm on a flat, grey day. Knowing how to capture a genuine moment before it disappears. Knowing how to make a bride feel calm when everything feels chaotic. None of that comes overnight.

Every course, every shoot, every mistake I've learned from it's all there in your photos. That experience is what separates "nice enough" photos from images that make you cry when you see them.

So What Are You Actually Paying For?

Let me break it down simply:

  • Planning & admin time — hours of behind-the-scenes communication and organisation

  • Travel — getting to you, wherever you are in Devon and beyond

  • Professional gear — camera bodies, lenses, memory cards, lighting, and backup equipment that doesn't come cheap

  • The shoot itself — my full attention, creativity, and expertise in the moment

  • Hours of editing — careful, skilled post-processing to make every image shine

  • Years of experience — the knowledge to handle anything and deliver results you'll love

You're not paying for photos. You're paying for the whole thing — from the first email to the final gallery delivery.

A Note From Me

I'll be honest with you: it bothers me a little when people assume this job is easy. Not because I need validation, but because I genuinely pour myself into this work. I care about your memories. I care about getting it right. I care about delivering something that still makes you smile in twenty years.

So when someone says "oh, I thought it would be cheaper" I understand. But I also know that the photographers who charge fairly are the ones who take your photos seriously. And that's exactly what you deserve.
